Public reminded not to handle, move wildlife

A lot of wildlife makes appearances during the summer season, and it is not uncommon for people to come across these animals while out and about. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) wants to remind everyone that the best thing to do when one comes across wildlife is to leave it alone and contact the appropriate people should the animal be in distress or human lives be in danger.

Almost showtime

Looking to enjoy a fun, family-friendly holiday tradition? The Lake Wateree Association will host the annual Fourth of July fireworks show on Tuesday, July 4 at around 9:15 p.m. The fireworks show is at Island 8, just offshore from Clearwater Cove Marina on the Camden side of the lake. The show starts around twighlight and will run for about a half hour. The public is invited. From land, the best vantage point to view the show is at Clearwater Cove Marina. HFKC to accept grant applications in September

The Health Foundation of Kershaw County (HFKC) will begin accepting applications for grants beginning September 1, 2017. The application process will close on September 30. Selected grants will be awarded to 501(c)(3) organizations which demonstrate a positive impact on the overall health of Kershaw County residents. Grants will be awarded in December.

UWKC searching for home repair volunteers

United Way of Kershaw County is seeking volunteers from church groups and civic organizations to assist with its home repair program which provides services for economically disadvantaged county homeowners. Volunteer groups can determine which houses to repair based on their number of volunteers, skills and available time frame. UWKC's Housing Director Marie Sheorn says there is a continual waiting list of 40 to 50 people requesting home repairs.

Backhoe Rodeo

The city of Camden's and Kershaw County's public works departments recently competed in the annual Backhoe Rodeo competition at City Hall Park, located behind Camden City Hall. The competitions are held annually by the American Public Works Association to demonstrate the skills of backhoe operators in a fun and challenging event. The competition was sponsored by the city of Camden and Kershaw County public works departments. "Red" Ray Peterson, water and sewer supervisor for the city of Camden, coordinated the event with Nick Anderson, manager, Kershaw County Public Works.

Laws strict regarding disturbing wild turkey nests

Frequently during the spring wild turkey nesting season the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is contacted concerning wild turkey nests that appear to be abandoned. These inquiries often involve concern for the welfare of the nest and eggs along with a desire to take the eggs and attempt to hatch them, according to Charles Ruth, coordinator for the SCDNR's Wild Turkey program. However, state law is clear on this subject and provides that it is unlawful to rob any wild turkey nest or to posses wild turkey eggs.

Susan G. Komen Lowcountry and Komen SC Mountains to Midlands are proud to announce a plan to strengthen operations and increase their impact by joining together as a single organization. The name for the new united Affiliate is "Komen South Carolina," which will reach the entire state including the previously un-served counties of Marlboro, Dillon, Darlington, Lee, Sumter and Clarendon.

King Kat tournament draws more than 120 anglers

The Cabela's King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of Lake Wateree April 28-29. In the 2-Day Super Event, more than 120 anglers from six different states competed not only for $11,000 in cash and prizes, but also for the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 Cabela's King Kat Northern and Southern Championship.
